A Taxpayer owes the government a percentage of their income and receipts for living within the borders of a country. That money is in turn used to operate the country on a day-to-day basis. This includes its government.
A shareholder owns a percentage of a company, or invests in a percentage of a company, and their goal is to benefit from business growth, profits and dividends.
The rules are completely different.
The overarching goal in the government is to spend taxpayer dollars without waste, fraud or abuse. We were warned about this at nausea within my training at the VA Acquisition Academy. The truth is that it still occurs. The reason example of this is the order of a contract to accompany owned by the husband of the spokesperson of Kristi Noem. The company had no pass performance and was created eight days before the contract award. That’s an example of waste, fraud and abuse. So is the scandal involving John Wyndham explained in the article above. Government personnel is not allowed to be privy to such preferential treatment.
Whereas any of the above-mentioned behaviors would be perfectly acceptable within the corporate sphere. No questions would’ve ever been asked. No investigation would’ve ever been conducted. Everybody would’ve accepted their reward and gone out about their day.
When I worked for the government, I was offered as much as $25,000 to write a vendor proposal and steer it towards award. There was also scuttlebutt about people meeting vendors at various restaurants and given envelopes full of money literally under the table.
I negotiated with members of the c-suite for every award I made, and they would routinely tell me that I deserve a reward for my actions because if I were doing what I was doing in the private sector I would be getting bonuses of fistfuls of money, private vacations or tickets to entertainment events. Whereas that would be on top of my $200,000 salary. I saved a company from bankruptcy and the only reward I got was more contracts to write.
Is your mind blown yet? If it isn’t now, this next story should accomplish that.
One of my fellow interns has a cousin who worked in contracting within DC. We were going up the elevator in the hotel one day after training, and he said, “Do you guys understand all that stuff that happens in books and movies about business deals? It’s all true. My cousin’s seen it. Businesses will hire escorts, drug people’s glass of wine, rough competition up or even kill them to get a contract award.”
Here’s another one. An instructor warned us about going out to steakhouses and flaunting the portfolios we had at our desks. They warned us specifically about something we needed to be aware of. Here’s how the story goes. “I was out at a steakhouse fraternizing with professionals and witnessed an occult couple selling their child to another couple.” They actually witnessed a check change hands and the child leave with the person who wrote it!
a blind eye is routinely turned to modesty because individuals in the private sector who do the same thing as those in the government not only receive a high salary and high bonuses, but rewards that build social image as well. Whereas serving the public is supposed to be just that for people who work in our federal government.
The things I would see in Chicago that people would do to boost their popularity that weren’t even a problem. A daily occurrence is women taking off their business jackets and unbuttoning their blouse to receive attention from men who will pay for the lifestyle they think they deserve. The pinnacle of this was a woman who accomplished the aforementioned, state to drink laid into the night and brag She was a former cheerleader. Therefore, members of a professional sports franchise began throwing her around the bar as she was laughing hysterically. She did that just so somebody would pay attention to her.
For males it’s routinely bullying at strip clubs. The pinnacle of male behavior that I heard about was simply dumping a pile of cocaine on a bar, snorting a line and inviting everybody else around them to do the same.
This behavior is why I routinely went to work, went home, cook supper, and watch the ball game or read a book.
I let my performance do the talking for me. I could’ve went out every night and bragged about the size of my business portfolio. I never did.
I take business transactions very seriously. I don’t need to negotiate at a golf course, poolside or a strip club.
