Quick Hitter: DFARS Part 224

Just as with my Quick Hitters on the FAR and GSAR, my Quick Hitter series on the DFARS is meant to simplify contracting business with the government.

DFARS Part 224 Protection Of Privacy & Freedom Of Information

Check the 5400 series within DoD’s collection of regulations. Its subpart 11 for privacy matters and subpart 7 for FOIA request.

Some are of the mindset that such can be used for threatening escapades. That being said, the release of information is at the discretion of the agency. Neither personal information nor contract information has to be released to anybody upon any request.

Individuals can utilize a request to retrieve their own information. A friend at my previous office did and he retrieved every email from the duration of his employment that had his name or variation thereof within it. I did the same in my request was denied.

These tools can be placed in your arsenal for professional development, and also unlock information out there about you that is floating on the superhighway that is the federal network. It’s worth conducting a request on yourself. If you are a FTE within the Federal Government then I highly suggest that you do.

Businesses can also utilize the services to recollect misplaced contract information. For example, I was working with a vendor who fired their point of contact. This person locked their filing cabinet after retrieving the contract information from the C-Suite as a revenge play. The CEO contacted me in a panic. I simply directed them to our local FOIA Specialist to collect their contract information. Within a day or two, it was like the former employee never locked their contractual agreement in a filing cabinet..

This part of the DFARS is curtailed. However, it’s contents can be powerful in aiding knowledge collection stemming from curiosity or need.

Each agency has its own or multiple points of contact to retrieve information on your behalf. It would behoove you to figure out who that is within the agency that you either currently have a contract with or are hopefully going to.
