Quick Hitter: DFARS Part 209

Just as with my Quick Hitters on the FAR and GSAR, my Quick Hitter series on the DFARS is meant to simplify contracting business with the government. This time with DoD.

DFARS 209.270-4 Procedures

The head of design control activity designates commodities as either aviation or ship critical safety items. See DFARS 209.270-2 for definitions and PGI 209.270-4 for additional information on aviation safety items as well as how both components were and are managed inside the acquisition process under the DoD umbrella. They must endorse qualification requirements as prescribed by the design control activity and accept certified proposals from qualified suppliers of such products.

The CO/KO must receive design control activity concurrence before award and refer any unapproved suppliers and/or product proposals to the head of design control activity for approval. Vendors of prospective or current status may request through their CO/KO a designation by the head of design control activity. DFARS 246.407 displays qualification requirements and DFARS 246.504 reminds to obtain a Certificate of Conformance.

My kid neighbor, the one who collected Frank Thomas baseball cards as a child, was a mechanic in the Air Force and worked quality inspection for their IG. This subpart reminded me of him. Neither him nor I ever contracted this stuff, but with my contracting prowess and his knowledge of aviation parts, I am sure we could become of service.
