Just as with my Quick Hitter series on the FAR, my Quick Hitter series on the GSAR is meant to simplify contracting business with the government. This time with GSA.
GSAR 504.1603 Procedures
Did you ever wonder what that series of numbers and letters meant in a GSA contract number? You’ll know soon.
The first set of six characters is the activity address code. The next two numbers are the contract’s assigned fiscal year. The ninth character is the instrument code. Characters 10-13 is the serial number. If you’re good then you can understand the abstract of a GSA contract simply by the contract’s number.
When I left the government, every agency was attempting to standardize contracting nomenclature. For example, when I started at the VA’s FSS program, all contracts began with V797 and when I left they began implementing a variation of GSA nomenclature beginning with 36F.
I have contacted many vendors within the GSA program notifying them of my consulting services.
