If You Understand The FAR Then You Can Understand Its Agency Supplements

The Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) is the foundation of the government’s procurement process. If you are able to apply its foundation then any agency supplement will be accessible for your company to do business with any federal agency.

There are 14 agency supplements assigned to 14 different agencies (https://www.acquisition.gov/content/supplemental-regulations). You can transfer your FAR knowledge to all of them. Each one has its own wrinkles because each mission is just a little bit different.

That’s why I wrote my “Quick Hitter” series on all 53 parts of the FAR. If you have yet to read them then go check them out.

The goal is to simplify the bureaucracy of the government so you can have the biggest buyer in the world as a business partner. It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is. You can do business with any one of the government’s executive agencies or their hundreds of sub-agencies.

When you write your offer proposal for government business, it is important to understand how the clauses and provisions in the solicitation steer the project. Those are made up of language from the FAR, the specified agency supplement as well as each individual contracting office.

Now you know and knowing is half the battle. Sometimes, the key to unlocking information is not knowing what question to ask, but who to ask that question to. Often times your assigned Contracting Officer is too busy to help you understand all this stuff. That is, if you have one. Except, what if you haven’t submitted that proposal yet? You know you possess the knowledge, skills, abilities and other attributes that the government needs, but you just need that person to clear a hole so you can hit pay dirt.
